Treasured Hockey Memorabilia

autographed NHL photosMy dad used to travel a lot when I was little, but he was always sure to bring my back something from his trip. As an avid sports fan, he tried to always make the keepsake something related to athletics. Since he was a prominent business owner, many of his clients would take him to sporting events during his trips.

One of the places that he frequently visited was Montreal, so I developed quite the collection of Expos and Canadians memorabilia. After attending one Canadians game, he was able to meet some of the players. He brought me back several autographed NHL photos, which I still keep framed in my office.

Edmonton Take a Beating on the Road

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 @ 08:11 PM

The Edmonton Oilers are to begin a five game stretch at home tonight with the Colorado Avalanche at 9 p.m. The Oilers only win on the road was in the opener in Colorado on November 8th. The 5-3 win was the Oilers’ only victory in their last eight games.

Hopefully the Oilers can pick up the pace now they are on their home turf. Good luck to Edmonton. After all, it couldn’t get worse.

The Blackhawks Rise Again

Chicago BlackhawksSince their establishment in 1926, the Chicago Blackhawks have only won three Stanley Cup championships. This is especially surprising given that the NHL was made up of only six teams for the 25-season stretch between 1942 and 1967. During that Original Six era, they were repeatedly defeated by the Canadian powerhouses in Toronto and Montreal. Still, the Hawks remain a proud franchise, and they have seen increased success in recent years.

In 2008, the team made the Western Conference finals where they were defeated by Detroit. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that Chicago led the league in home attendance, raking in money during a particularly harsh economic period. The team also played an outdoor game inside Wrigley Field that drew national attention from hockey fans and others who were curious to see such a spectacle. Chicago Blackhawks jerseys are flying off the racks in conjunction with the team’s resurgence.

Hurricanes Goalie Cam Ward Out for 3-4 Weeks

Sunday, November 8, 2009 @ 10:11 PM

Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward remains in a Columbus, Ohio hospital after a skate laceration to his upper leg during a game with the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Ward’s leg was stitched up,  however, he will be kept in hospital until Monday.  Ward stretched to make a save while Rick Nash, captain of the Blue Jackets, skated through the crease.  It seemed that Nash nicked Ward’s leg with his skate.

Ward was injured during the first period on Saturday night’s game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The Hurricanes lost 3-2 to the Blue Jackets.  Michael Leighton relieved Ward and stopped 19 shots.  Unfortunately, he gave up three goals early in the third period.

Habs Win In Shootout

Sunday, November 1, 2009 @ 12:11 PM

With the Montreal Canadiens dressed in the uniforms worn in the 1912-1913, they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in a shootout. Although they won the game, they certainly didn’t win on the looks department. Their uniforms have definitely changed for the better over the last 97 years! Maybe being that it was Halloween, they could get away with it!

The Leafs managed to go from 2 goals down to tie the game in the final few minutes of the game. With two goals scored by Canadiens Mike Cammalleri and Scott Gomez, the Canadiens managed to pull off the win.
